Community Development

The arts can be used as a positive force in empowering young people to play an important role in the development of community.  I have found that using movement, storytelling and theatre development as an ‘in’ with kids can open up a world of creative opportunity.  I have had extensive experience as not only a resident artist but also in designing, coordinating and managing community engagement projects.

Through an innovative new approach to residential development, AWESOME Arts has set off on a new partnership with the LWP Property Group to develop a cultural arts program for their their WA developments: The Glades, Ellenbrook and Trinity.  This is an exciting opportunity to integrate the arts in the grass-roots of building not only homes but a thriving community of residents.

Lead Artist: Created project concept

After working on the Creative Challenge project for two years as an artist, in 2009 the concept I created for the OPEN BOOK project landed me the amazing opportunity to be Lead Artist on the project.  OPEN BOOK is based on the idea of using multi-discipline arts to give kids in regional communities an opportunity to tell their own stories in their own way.  The project was a collaboration of 19 artists from varied fields including dance, theatre, animation, sound and visual arts.  We completed 10 2-week residencies in regional and remote areas of Western Australia in teams of 2 artists.  The outcomes were beyond my expectations and were showcased at the 2009 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things in the Perth CBD.
